While on a high school tour with my son, I saw these words as part of a larger-than-life mural in the stairwell. As I walked by, I paused a bit to be sure I memorized it correctly. Something about it moved me.
Persistent. This concept is not new to me. When I’m looking to learn a new skill, start a new project or figure something out that’s been bothering me, I’ve got persistent down. I make the plan, I work the plan. Consistent? That is the secret sauce to pushing through to the next level. That is where you enact the discipline to stay focused, day in and day out, taking your latest acquisition with you.
Perhaps what struck me the most about the saying is that I feel these words so vividly right now as I enter year four of being an entrepreneur. I’m finding it’s more than having a vision, goals, and best practices. It’s more than the persistent push to tell the stories, impact the community and coach the next gen. That is all incredibly important. But equally important is sticking with it. EVERY. DAY. And I continue to remind myself that if I stop, it’s never going to happen. So why not keep going? Why not be persistent and consistent and see where this goes?
The simplicity of it, I feel, is what makes it valid and true.
Knowing that students will pass by the mural and read the words daily, perhaps multiple times a day, I can only have hope of what they will bring to us as they grow. How will these words seep into their souls, pushing them beyond their limits, keeping them focused? That thought alone is worth giving this persistent / consistent thing a try.
